Evaluating the Situation

The first step in determining the best route to take for repairing your lawn is to understand what your options are. In short, you need to determine how large your budget is for rehabilitating the lawn and what you are willing to forgo because of a lack of budget and still remain happy with the finished product. The goal is to match your desires with the problems your lawn has and work toward a solution.

One of the first ways to evaluate the soil is to conduct a professional soil test. This process is important no matter how you plan to repair the soil and lawn. In addition to this testing, also dig a hole in the lawn about 6 to 8 inches deep. Look at the quality of the soil itself. The best soil has a thick layer of topsoil at least 6 inches deep. If you have densely packed clay, porous sand, or stones, the soil condition is not ideal for growing a full lawn as it stands. If you lack quality soil, the lawn will always struggle.

If your plan is to add a significant amount of topsoil to your yard, read Chapter 6, and start the lawn from scratch. Otherwise, you can add as much as a full inch of topsoil over the top of your existing lawn to repair the quality of it. If that is your plan, continue with the following steps.
